The 58th CANUSA Games will be held in Hamilton, Ontario, August 7-9, 2015. Our Optimist Club has been there for every year, since the beginning! As has been our longstanding custom, in odd numbered years, we provide a lunch/snack for the returning athletes as they cross into the USA at Port Huron (even numbered years when the Games are in Flint, our Club provides a continental breakfast at the closing ceremonies on Sunday morning). We will likely be providing between 600 and 700 bags of food for the returning athletes.
Steve Schlott, although he has a prior out of town commitment on AUG 9, has signed up as the Co-leader of the event and will coordinate activities and tasks leading up to Operation Feedbag. We need a group of Optimists to go to Port Huron that morning, assemble the lunch food bags, and place the boxes on the returning buses as they come through. The entire operation can be handled by no more than eight people in total.
Here is what our duties consist of for this year, and some other information:
- Purchasing and assembling bags of prepackaged foods/snacks/beverage.
- Putting the predetermined number of bags into boxes to be placed on each of the 13 buses as they come through the Michigan Welcome Center on I-94 in Port Huron.
The time commitment on Sunday morning is arriving in Port Huron about 9:00 or 9:30 in the morning and then leaving by about 1:00 or 1:30 in the afternoon after the last bus makes its pickup.
Thanks for embracing this tradition and great opportunity to serve youth and our community! More information will follow at our breakfast meetings and as necessary via email to volunteers.
